Community Village

Community Village

A sanctuary for people without a place to live

Choice of Stays

Community Village vision is to offer crisis accommodation and services for displaced families, individuals, women & children, using flexible forms of accommodating people that may be varied depending on the circumstances of each guest.

Initially Community Village will welcome people who need a place to stay whether in a car, van, camper or caravan. Within several weeks, it is expected there will be buildings cleaned up, restored and reconfigured to provide emergency accommodation for couples, individuals and families. Amongst the park like surrounds, a range of accommodation options from small self-contained living modules to eco homes connected to the community solar power grid and rain water storage, will be set up over time. Parking areas allow people to stay overnight in their car if needed, and facilities will soon be available for showering and cooking all year round.

All spaces will have access to clean washing and toilet amenities as the work is completed and extended uses come on line.

Spaces for Tents and Outdoor camping under the stars

Camping can be fun for a few days or week, and due to circumstances, a tent may be the only form of shelter available. At least those in tents can join others in the tent precinct and make the most of their stay.

Community Village aims to transition people from cars and tents to more livable housing as quickly as possible, and the housing pods planned for future stages are one of the solutions.

Safe Spaces for Cars, Vans, Campervans & caravans

There’s no stigma, just a caring community. People that have no where else to live, can stay in a precinct of other village guests with similar accommodation. Subject to availability at the time, guests in need will be provided the option of staying in emergency accommodation or a short term eco housing pod. Either way, they will not be harassed and can begin putting their lives back together.

Emergency/small housing pods

Housing types planned for the village will be eco-friendly and respectful of the natural habitat, yet provide safe and private accommodation for 2 people short term. Additional eco housing pod designs will house a small family, with air conditioning and compact facilities that meets basic needs.

Short Term Transitional Home

Following the initial stages of developing flexible spaces for people to simply use if they are limited to a car, campervan, tent or mobile home, areas will be prepared to allow placement of eco housing pods that can accommodate a small family as they transition back into larger, longer term housing in the community.

Services

Currently, the village is being prepared to offer a safe space for people who currently stay in cars, vans, campers, tents and caravans. The buildings provide an opportunity to create emergency accommodation and other services to assist people living onsite. One of the benefits of activity and people occupying the land, it provides zero cost security and maintenance.

Current Services being Developed

Services are defined as provisions that are directed towards assisting village guests who may have nowhere else to live. Upon arrival at the village, each guest’s needs are considered during a chat with the site manager, or volunteer of Qld Homelesssness Working Group (QHWG). Once a better understanding of the circumstances are known, QHWG can help with getting settled into the village, and arrange for any wrap-around services that would be of benefit. These services range in terms of:

  • Segregated amenities with toilets, showers and laundry
  • Care Packs with essential supplies for individuals, with add-ons for women and children
  • Meal vouchers from local businesses, community groups and charities
  • Food from Foodbank and other external sponsors
  • Counseling for traumatised families and individuals
  • Clean bedding & towels
  • Clothing & shoes from charity shops and community groups

Bus Service at the Gate

Being within 1km to IGA Supermarket and just 4mins by bus to Tewantin CBD, it is an aim of the project to provide guests with a free bus pass so they can get around town, attend to essential other services, keep a job, attend school and all the things that reliable transport provides.

Village Social Events

Once each month it is proposed that the “self organising collective” of Community Village will hold a daytime village social event lasting 3-4hrs, and based around food to bring guests together and help break down barriers.

Community Facilities

Facilities in the village will be established where people can attend workshops, education programs, creative arts and read books. Creativity and constructive involvement in little projects will help guests build self worth and confidence, plus add to the eclectic vibe of the village. A rustic village cafe run by guests is also planned for a suitable space in time.

Services planned for the village will be free to guests and delivered by specialists in their relevant areas. These may include:

  1. Analysis and coaching on personal, family and financial matters to fix the cause of their issues;
  2. Referral to specific emergency or short-term accommodation if needed;
  3. A range of wraparound support services delivered by reputable local charities:
  4. Debt relief from unsustainable obligations causing financial hardship, or accumulated debts from interest, infringements, overdue fees and the like;
  5. Negotiation with agents, landlords and employers to assist where needed;
  6. Assistance with child support & knowledge development programs or facilities;
  7. Assistance accessing medical, health and dental services;
  8. Assisting with sale of unnecessary or burdensome vehicles & equipment such as boats, caravans, motorbikes and toys that are draining on financial resources or can be used to pay out debt.
